It was 8C this morning when I went for my golf. I have my Thursday off. After Penang I will drop in at Kulim to pay homage to my 12^th Uncle and also visit my sister in Sungei Patani, then down to Ipoh on 6^th Oct for my nephew’s wedding.

Dear Stewart,

Thank you for the email photos of John, Kok Poh & Paul. I will catch up with
Paul later on. This Sat I have been rostered on from 0900 - 1300 hrs and I
normally play 9 holes of golf when I worked. However,I did not play this
afternoon as I have to do some packing and off on Tues 08/06/10 to Hong
Kong, Macau,Zhuhai, Shengzhen,Guangzhou, Ipoh on 16/06/10 to celebrate my
wife's b'day. Alice's brother has already booked the restaurant in Ipoh. We
will be back in Adelaide on Sun 20/06/10. Alice has been cooking for the
past week as we are having 32 friends for her pre b'day party. She loves to
cook and entertain. When our three children had their 21 b'day celebration
she could cook for 40 over guests. We will also have a Karaoke night. I have
a plasma screen with the surround sound and thousands of karaoke DVDs and
also a Karaoke microphone from S. Korea. I wish all of you are here. I still
love the down memory lane like -" Rose, Rose, I love you " I use to organize
the singing on the bus with the medical group when we travel overseas.
Incidentally, I sang at my daughter's wedding ( " Take good care of my baby
" & "The wonder of you" and also at my 2nd sons'wedding ( " The Wedding song
- Ave Maria" and also played the Hohner's Chromatic Harmonica.Hardly anyone
play the harmonica these days.I will be singing " Around the World in search
for you", tomorrow night for Alice and my niece from Ipoh who is doing her
first yr. Pharmacy will accompany me on the piano.We will have a late night
with lots of red & white wine.

rooms , a big family room & a large dining hall.

receptionists & 3 part time R/Ns who do all the immunizations & dressings,
Gribbles' Pathology on site. It is a very busy practice.

Football - the round type

This is one story you will find hard to believe: that in Australia, the land down under, the people play football _the round type, sounds almost unbelievable. This is because the Aussies have always been playing football for younks but the shape of the balls has always been that of an olive (kana in chinese, zaitun in Malay) (oval, eggshaped, ovate, oviform, ovoid, elliptical, whichever word you want to choose)
You and I in Kulim and elsewhere in Malaysia, indeed the old world over have been kicking the round ball on the padang or any open spaces adjacent to the schools or our homes since we could run. All we needed was some shoes or school bags, or poles to mark the goal posts and we would run chasing the ball all over the space until someone intercepts it. This goes on all the time, morning, noon or evening like crazy.
The confusion is that the games they play in Down Under have always been called football whether it be rugger, rugby league or Aussie rules. Incidentally, Aussie rules, as far as I and many new comers are concerned, is stupid because it is rough and does not appear to have any rules. My friends will dispute that but to say the least the game looks chaotic.
So, to avoid confusion, the Aussies insist on calling the new game that they have adopted as soccer , or football - the round type. Hence the derivative socceroos.
The game, football of the round type will dominate the scene in the near future indeed it already has a very large following .
The Aussies are madly in love with sports, indeed sports of any type except badminton because they are not good at it. Their body mass prevents them from being agile.

I am glad that I have now made a new friend, a younger member of the old boys of our Alma Mater, St. Patrick’s School. Thank you for the perusal of the “ A letter from Dave to the teens of Kulim ( “ beloved Kulim” ) 1957 – 1965.” I commend you for initiating “Thetree RU Project” . Keep up the great work and the Tree will flourish. Unfortunately, the old boys of Bukit Mertajam High School have completely lost touch with one another – what a shame!

I giggle at your “ Friday Funny “ email & I showed it to my wife, Alice & she blushed & burst out laughing. I have a lot of geriatrics in my Practice & in a subtle way I relate to them the email. I reiterated that as the women get older the breasts hit the South Pole and hence the picture in the email! Incidentally, Adelaide has a nudist beach at Moana. Most of us are low on serum level of Vit D as we are have Sun Block 30 + and covered up from the UV radiation.I play three days of 18 holes of golf weekly, I drink my milk and I still have to take 1000 iu of Ostelin Vit D ! How about the nudist beach at Batu Ferringhi ? ! No takers.

Many thanks for your very exhaustive email . You have an amazing recollection of the names. I am sorry that we lost Dr Choong Tet Min who also did his internship in Penang. He was to take over my Medical Post with the 3^rd Royal Malay Regiment when I returned to be the Medical Officer I/C of Batu Gajah Dist. Hosp. I hardly return to Kulim these days due to some misunderstanding with some relatives in Kulim. .

I caught up with Kok Poh, Ng Chew Wah, H.M & SI Malakar in Kulim on our way to South America x 3 weeks a couple of years ago. Haven’t seen them for years.

We have more face to wash & less hair to comb these days.

I had a big b’day party on 14^th March. The Surgery gave me a surprise and my children invited my contemporaries to Imperial Peking Resturant.

As Australia is short of GPs I keep on working. I still enjoy my work. I am a member of Grange Golf Club which boasts of 18 holes West Course – lots of deep bunkers and 18 holes East Course – narrow & lots of water & wet land. I have my Thursdays off and 0900 – 1300hrs on alt. Sat. as the younger GPs will not work.

We migrated here in 1977 and I bought over my building at St Morris & practiced there for 28 yrs & when I turned 65 in 2005 I decided to join a big Practice so that I could slow down, play golf and lots of Overseas’ travelling. I practiced in Menglembu, Perak from 1967 – 1976 as my wife was from Ipoh. I met her when she did her Nursing in Penang. We have 8 grandchildren – 2 sets of twins!. Mu daughter, Cheryl is the youngest, She is a Dentist. She has twin boys – 3 yrs old.

My second son, Jarrod is a Consultant Accident/Emergency Specialist at Royal Adelaide Hospital & now at a Private Hosp – Wakefield Hosp. His wife Browyn Gordon (Aussie) is in Psychiatrist training . They have a twin – boy & a girl and also a daughter , Maddie – 4 yrs old and a latest son – 7 months old. My eldest son, Steve is in a big Primary Care Medical Practice and his wife, Anita (ABC – Australian born Chinese ) – a boy, Elliot – 6yrs & Phoebe – 3 yrs old and Anita is a Ph D Consultant Rheumatologist at Royal Adelaide Hosp & Private Practice at Wakefield Hosp. The grandchildren keep the grandma busy.

More next time, as I have to work tomorrow.

Dear Ronnie,
Wow!!! those photos are real treasure and could I reproduce them, enlarged them to put up at the Hospitality Suite at the reunion as it can help bring back the memories.
I can recognize Scully, Chin and Auyong Teik Yoon. As for you I cannot recognize when you were that young but the last time I saw you was before 1970 in your clinic
Menglingbu, Ipoh. After that I was transferred to KL but I did hear that you left for Australia. One of the faces there is Cheah Kok Poh, in the scout uniform and he is going
to be at THEtreeRU, in fact as the MC. Cheah Kok Poh, still lives in Kulim but comes down to KL once in a while and I will pass him your photo so that he could round up
more of those in your class or time. Choong Tet Min met with an accident in Kedah and is not around but his younger brother Choong Tet Shin is joining us at the reunion.
Attached are some details of the THEtreeRU and we hope you will join us.
I hear that John Loh, who is now in Perth, may be joining us but is yet to be confirmed.

What great pictures!! They must be the earliest photos I have seen taken at St Patricks and how appropriate - at a time when we are all planning
to meet in at the THEtreeRU in Penang in October! Thanks to Teddy for forwarding it to me. I think I can recognize a few extra people:-

* Mr. Chin second person on his right
* Its not Choong Tet Min at the back of Lim Thew but Choong Tet Chuen! Tet Min is also in the picture and seated next to Pak Seng..
(I know the brothers well as they lived across the street from me. Sadly, as Teddy mentioned, Tet Min died in a traffic accident after
practicing in Alor Star for only a few years. Tet Chuen, who ran the Kulim Printing Press very much on his own after his father died
in the early 60s, has also passed on a few years ago).
* Is that or teacher Mr. Clifford between Mr. Scully and Pak Seng?
* I cannot remember the name of the teacher on the right of Mr. Auyong except recall that he was my Science teacher and he also
heads Cornelius House - the sports house I belong to in school.

I recalled that Mr. Scully was always red-faced (?boozing) and quite a volatile character who rode a big BSA motor bike around. Mr.Chin
was a handsome looking guy and a very good swimmer but he died when he was quite young of ?TB. I also recalled writing to the two
brothers Lim Thew and Lim Poh who studied in Sydney in 1962 regarding my interest to come and study in Australia. Are they living
in Australia? Do you remember VS Paul who is a contemporary of Cheah Kok Poh and the late Chan Kum Lau (who has a 2nd Dan
and ran a Tae Kwan Do school in Butterworth). I am in contact with Datuk Victor S Paul who is Managing Director of Perkasa Construction
Sdn Bhd in KK in Sabah. Paul is doing extremely well and highly respected in KK - he would love to hear from you.

Just in case you are still wondering who is this chappie Stewart Chew, well I am a few years younger than you. We were a big family
in 9 Jalan Raya. I was fairly involved with the Scouting movement at St. Patricks and my seniors were Cheah Kok Poh (my Patrol
Leader), VS Paul, ?Kee Liang (of Thye Joo) etc.

I remember you and Pak Seng quite well. Your parents owned Weng Thye Foundry in Jalan Kelang Lama, not far from the Kulim Police Station.
Your neighbour was Bee Tatt Clothes Merchant right? Do you remember your Bee Tatt neighbour Kok Soo Fen (Steven Kok) who studied
in Chung Ling High School. He was my contemporary at UWA in Perth and I became quite good friends with him (knowing that he hailed from Kulim!).
Well, Steve lives in Sydney (email: soofen2712@yahoo.com.au).

After finishing Form 5 in Badlishah in 1960 (we had to leave St. Patricks after passing form 3 because there were not enough students to have
a form 4) I worked a temporary teacher at Junjong for a couple of years. In 1963, planned to come to Perth with classmate Arunogary to further
our studies. Aru changed his mind and decided to head north to India to do medicine. He graduated and returned to Kulim and started Aru
Clinic in Jalan Raya. I believed Arunogary passed away several years ago.

I graduated from University of WA with an MSc (Medical Technology). Returned to Malaysia in 1970 and worked in the Pathology Dept. at the Universiti
Hospital in PJ. Recalled several pathologists in Histopath that I worked for such a Prof. Lau Kum Seng (he migrated to ?Melbourne), Dr. Murugasu
(currently in Adelaide?) and Dr.Chong (runs a specialist centre in Brisbane). Of course there was the very conspicuous Dr Anthony.Leong (a 6 footer)
who is quite a prominent neuropathologist currently with the ?Hawksbury Group.

I have retired two years ago as a Senior Lecturer in Medical Science (Histopathology) at Curtin University in Perth - after 31 years of service!! Have
been traveling quite a bit since my retirement and am enjoying the things that I always said I wish I had more time for, in the past. Yes, John Loh
and wife Agatha also lives in Perth and we are in close contact (John's younger brother Loh Yoon Choy was my classmate), Hope you like the
picture enclosed of us during Kok Poh's recent Perth visit.

What a great idea that we can all meet together for a very confusing "who's who?" session in the THEtreeRU meet in Penang in October - thanks
to the initiative and hardwork of Teddy and his team.

Greetings to Ted, Bill & John,

I manage to get the email address of Ted & Bill from Richard Tan when I had
a chit chat with him this morning. Recently, Richard became my patient when
he consulted me at the Family Practice - Arkaba Medical Centre, Parkside,
South Australia. We have 20 GPs - half of them are female GPs who work part
time.

Richard email me the Flyer with regard to the reunion of the old boys of St.
Patrick's School on 01/10/2010 in Penang. Richard reiterated that John has
accepted the invitation. My wife and I will love to catch up with all of
you, especially with John whom I haven't seen since 1954. John, Harcharan
Singh & I were a couple of years ahead of Ted. I have a vague recollection
of Bill. I was at B.M. High School from 1955 - 1956 & I left for India to do
my Medicine & returned in 1964 to complete my Internship training at General
Hospital, Penang. In 1966, 12 Medical Officers were conscripted into the
Armed Forces when we fought the war against Indonesia during the infamous
Confrontasi. I was the Regimental RMO with the 3rd Royal Malay Regiment x 1
yr and I was posted to Bau, Kuching, Sarawak. I write tell you more in my
next email

reunion. I hardly visit Malaysia these days.

R U Ready

In the morning for those interested meet up at the poolside at 6.00 am for Tai Chi

exercises or those who want to go for the morning walk be out side of the hotel by 6.30 am

and we will walk along Gurney Drive (can assure you it is interesting) or those that want

the gym just go there, bet you are not alone, those that want a swim the pool is yours.

As for breakfast meet at 7.30 am at THEtreeRU corner, it is specially reserved for us and

you can take all the time, the whole morning for breakfast. But for those who want to have

their breakfast outside the hotel there are a variety and walking distance and they are

good and tasty but you need to take a walk to Pulau Tikus, you can have Penang curry mee,

prawn mee, ‘Chay Koay Teow’, ‘Koay Chup’, ‘Ah Pong’, and many other Penang specials.

The morning is free and easy or meet at the hospitality suite and catch up on the lost times

A collection of photos of those days on picnics, excursions, cycling trips, dance parties

hiking up BM hill and Kedah Peak are all up on the walls. Check it out and see if you can recall

those days and who were there and can you recognize all those in the photos. I can assure

you it is great fun. We also have a huge map of Kulim and stick a tape on where you used to

lived. As for lunch we highly recommend that you go to the Berjaya Hotel for the Malaysian

Buffet and they have a special discount for senior citizens, all of us LAH!! it is real cheap at

RM 17.00 per head. You could of course take your own sweet time to have lunch and spend a

good 2 hours there. As for those who prefer the Penang hawker food or the Nonya food in

Pulau Tikus or you may go else where like Sri Bahari Rd, some nice restaurants there.

The afternoon is free and easy and could take a short walk to the Sleeping Buddha or the

recently opened ‘Kuan Yin’ in Ayer Itam may be worth visiting.

At 6.30 pm we meet at the foyer to the dinning hall where we will have a cocktail, and this

where we will exchange gifts as we were suppose to bring a gift of less than RM30 and

exchange it so we are going to have an interesting time, some surprises and may be some

disappointments but remember it is all for the fun of it. At one corner of the foyer we will

have some selected videos from You Tube and the songs have been specially selected as it

has certain messages and may touch you, drop a tear or two and enjoy it.

Dinner will start at 8.00 pm and it is a buffet dinner you are free to start at what ever time

you want and as long as you want. Of course in between we have music of the 60’s and some

great entertainment, you will laugh or cry but they have been specially put up for you, there

are some good singers, if they are no good throw them out. Dance if you want or can but at

the end of it is the Auld Lang Syne, we all sing this together at 12.00 midnight and till we

meet again.

My interest in education takes me through some of the schools to find what the children are learning. This is one example of what is taking place in one of the schools in Sydney. I am not suggesting that we imitate whatever is done in schools in other places but it is good to see what imagination can do. We have to be more imaginative and explore the wider world for our own good. Learning need not be confined to just the three Rs.What we need most are leaders with imagination in the field of education to make the country bloom.

Almost all countries have some mission statements on Education. The article following is an intent put out by The US President, Barack Obama on the outcome of his educational policy.
I have chosen to put this statement on the blog because it so happens that education is my calling.
Australia has also made big strides in its education programme through the introduction of early childhood education and the implementation of the teaching of languages in schools to name just two areas.
What I am driving at is the importance of education in the preparation of our young for the tasks ahead in all areas of life. It is not enough to just say 'copy the Chinese or the Jews to show improvement' as one politician put it. It involves a lot of energy put in by the students guided by well trained educators.
What is the quality of the programmes that help to prepare our children for higher education not just in the main cities but also throughout the nation. Do we have well trained teachers in the various fields, do we have proper facilities to help with the acquisition of knowledge such as science and language labs especially in the primary and lower secondary areas of the country?
Do we leave out subjects, for example languages, simply because the children have difficulty in coping with their learning?
How often has the government done its homework to improve its education policy?
Something to think about for the purpose of nation building.

Dear Ron,

Your suggestion to include a visit to Kulim for our of group of 'geriatric tourists' is a great idea! I am sure that a tour to our old schools will bring back
wonderful memories (and tears). It will be hilarious when we all front up in the same T shirts!! Perhaps lets get some publicity - let the local papers know about our visit. Then Kulim will really have woken up and remember this return of her 'children' for long time!!

The Kulim Club is possibly an appropriate venue for our lunch - I am sure Cheah Kok Poh would be able to arrange that.

I like the t-shirt idea. I will talk to Aaron this week-end. We get the t-shirts printed in Malaysia. It is cheaper and in any case the t-shirts in Aus are mostly made in China.
We are going to smell if we wear the same t-shirt for 3 days. We can give each one 1 t-shirt as part of the function cost but make extra t-shirts available for sale. We can take orders when we get responses of intent to attend to ensure that we get printed the right quantity and sizes.

What do you think of the idea of organising a lunch in Kulim?. We can hire a bus to take us there from Penang for the lunch and include a quick tour of Kulim. Perhaps we can organise with the headmasters of St Pat, St Anne and SBS for a quick tour of the schools. Just imagine all these oldies turning up in Kulim and the schools all dressed in the same t-shirts. Kulim will remember us for a long long time.

I will be staying on�after the reunion, but I don't have any plans about what I will do.
I have thought of going to China from KL for a week or 2. If you have any suggestions of
prolonging our reunion with visits to Kulim etc. I will be in that. Actually Teddy and I did
just that in April this year and it was very enjoyable. I can be tempted to do it again. I
am so busy now watching the grass grow so I guess it does not take much to make me extend my
stay. Maybe I will find an unfortunate Aussie girl to come with me since you lot will have
your spouses with you.

Confusion Reigns

I received an email from someone by the username of chewhg. It got me puzzled for quite a while. The problem grew intense because the email was from .au. I was a bit relieved when I was asked whether it was snowing in Canberre when it was 3deg in Perth. That narrowed the field by a mile. It suddenly dawned on me that it could be from David but he was from Singapore. I then settled with the idea that David had moved to Perth from Singapore.
The revelation came the following day in a reply from the guy who sent the email.
It was Stewart. I then wrote the following message to him--

How silly of me. You left out your christian name. Confusion certainly took over me for quite a while. Stewart and Chew Huat Guan are the same person. (Repeat 100 tiimes) I am familiar with Stewart because I have tasted his excellent char koey teow but Chew Huat Guan is new to me. Sorry mate.
Please let me into the difference between Huat Guan and Huat Hock? I have not heard from David for a long time. He must be a very busy man.

The retirement of Brother Paul Ho brought to a close the 157-year presence of the La Salle Brothers in Malaysia. The legacy La Salle brothers in Malaysia started in March 1852 when a majestic sailing ship completed its 3-month voyage and entered Singapore's busy harbour. Six Brothers came ashore to take charge of St. Joseph's Institution, Singapore and in Penang the very same month, St. Xavier's Institution.

Anthony Khoo, Wm Dielenberg

Another sad piece of news. One of those who attended the 50 years Reunion in Penang, Anthony Khoo, passed away yesterday. I have attached pictures of him taken at the Reunion.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, 23^rd May from his home in Taman Sentosa, B Mertajam. I saw him in his house the last time I was back in Kulim and after you left and went back to Alor Star. We went to see him again in BM and of course with LOH Yoon Choy. At that time he already had problems with his back and could not walk and needed a walker to help him.

Anthony Khoo was with us in Form 3, he was senior to us but was retained. He used to stay in Machang Bubok and travel daily in our head master, Auyong Teik Yoon’s HILLMAN so much so I always thought he was related to him and got corrected by Anthony Khoo when we were last in Penang.

I have already arranged for Loh Yoon Choy to send a wreath on our behalf.

You know two down already. This means if we all were to meet next year it will be two short. Let us hope 2 is enough. If some more it will frighten the shit out all of us lah!. I will try and send a photo of him of those years so that others may remember him.

Memoirs of Kulim Coronation Cinema

I read your recollections of the old Kulim Coronation Cinema with great delight. I am a little younger and I do recall enjoying going to the ‘Cowboy VS Indians’ film shows. I think I paid 40 cents for 3rd class, but sometimes when I went with my sisters, I had to go second class which cost 65 cents. I do remember the heroes Alan Ladd and of course there were others like Gene Autrey, Roy Rogers and my favourite Audie Murphy (not to be mistaken with EddieMurphy)
Later, because my elder brother worked in Lian Thye Hoe (a Chinese Liquor Store in Kelang Lama) which had connections with the proprietary of the Coronation, we were actually given 2 free tickets a month. Guess what? We were upgraded to 1st class upstairs!
On some good days, if I had a spare fives cents I spent it on buying nutmeg ‘hum sar lay’ (preserved skewer of nutmeg or green mango) and enjoy it during the show. Sometimes it would be a small newspaper cone filled with rojak for 5 cents! The options for tit-bits those days were incredible – there was ‘kachang puteh’ (I particularly like the dry round ones – you can break your teeth eating them!), fruit slices of pineapple, papaya, mango, water melon and ‘bung kwang’ which were pre-chilled on top of a large block of ice. Of course, don’t forget the messy ‘sng wan’ (shaved ice ‘ball’ in syrup) that we all liked.
I distinctly remember having to shut my eyes to the bright sun when the show was over as we trooped out of the cinema .
Those were the good old days when you can have a bowl of char siew mee for 20 cents and for a couple of extra wantons you pay 30 cents. Char koay teow with egg was 30 cents and ‘Kopi or peng’ was 20 cents! And this is all available outside the Coronation cinema.
I was back there recently and its surroundings haven’t really changed very much, except that that Coronation has now become a very congested bazaar. I ambled into a stall for a cool drink of chrysanthemum tea and stood right next to this hawker selling rambutans and langsats whilst I (sadly) reminisced about those good old days. As far as I can remember, this ‘leong char’ stall with its big brass vats containing the drinks has been there all these years!
Keep the fire of this St. Patrick’s School c60 Alumni burning. It sure brings back sweet memories.
I will be seeing Teddy in KL in April.

Hi Guys,

Its quite strange that I too had a fascination for the 'char koey teow' man's antics as much as his delicious 'char koey teow'. Apparently my 'char koey teow' is quite well known among my Chinese friends here in Perth!I learn a lot about the technique by watching the Penang hawkers do it. Lets compare our methods. First, you must use a very hot wok (preferably of cast iron) - use plenty of hot oil (tastier if lard ouch!!)and a generous scatter of chopped garlic. I used chopped fish cake or prawns for taste. We can get nice fresh koey teow, bean sprouts and even 'koo chye' (chives). In place of cockles, indulge in a few chopped fresh oysters!Fry quickly on a very hot wok. Do not cook more that a couple a serves at a time (the idea is to scorch it on a very hot pan. Add the usual light and dark soy to taste. Add a tablespoonful of 'sambal olek'. Put in the bean sprouts last followed by the oysters. Quickly take it out. Bet you it'll taste good.

My appetite for Char Koey Teow

What is your appetite like for hawker food?
I enjoy a plate of hot (as in temperature), hot (as in chilly) Koey Teow.
My first taste of Koey Teow was the one prepared by an old man just outside Coronation cinema.
He used to do a roaring wayside business. Watchiing him stir frying the stuff is just mouth watering. A springkling of garlic on to a spoonful of hot oil, you can almost hear the the garlic sizzling , followed by a spoonful of chilly smashed in a lesong. Then it was followed by two handsfull of the noodle, This was stirred rapidly before an egg was cracked over the mixture, I always paid extra for a second egg. I forgot, I would always insist on some prawns and slices of chinese sausage. Within minutes my mouth watering koey teow, with bean sprout added, was bundled in a piece of banana leaf layered over by a piece of newspaper. There were times when I would squat by the wayside to savour the stuff. Most times I would take the makan home to share it with my mum and the other siblings.
Recently I have been experimenting with the frying myself. I have reached a stage when I can say that it is like the real thing.

I too spent my youth in Kulim. We, My brother Gilbert and I were sent to St. Patrick to continue our education after it was interrupted by the second world war. I know it was a long time ago.
I was in Std four and my brother must have been in Std three. That was in 1947. We loved school because we were always in the front line to collect prizes for our successful performances. I completed School Certificate in B.M. High school within the next four years - quite an achievement.
One of the things we used to engage ourselves in was watching films at the Coronation Theatre. We would all line up at the third class entrance and as soon as the show started we would sneek ourselves through the screened doorway after slipping twenty cent coins into the ticket collector's hand.
Our hero was Allan Ladd. Western was our first choice. Second was Tarzan.
We would wait patiently for the adds and coming attractions to roll by and as soon as we saw the words "Directed by" the whole theatre would burst into a roar of applause because we knew the show would be starting. It was fun. We really enjoyed ourselves together with the rest of the audiance.
Guess what? Each time the heroes went charging after the Red Indians, in the case of the Westerns, we would all clap and cheer half expecting the soldiers to wipe out the Indians.
When the show ended we would all walk out feeling all excited and recalling all the actions that took part in the show. Such was the excitement each time we went to the cinema. I used to love the Coronation theatre. It was a place to escape from the hard work at home.

Greetings William.
Haven't been accessing your blog for a long time as I was very busy. It was my brother stewart who drew my attention to this picture of the boy scouts to see how many I could recall. Straight away I could figure Kok Poh and Hardev Singh and will take my time to figure out who the rest are.

A point of correction here William regarding Auyong Teik Yoon. He was still very much alive in 1960 when I was in Form 3. He passed away only in late 1965. I attended his funeral then. Will catch up with you later.

Not heard from you for a long time. How are things? How did your attempt at your doctorate go?
I know, the blog has not had any life at all mainly because I have not had any contributions from anyone. I really thought, after the reunion the blog would pick up more energy. It is true only a few of our comrades have access to computers let alone the knowledge of using the damn thing. Some are just lazy.
I hope you can help me revive it.
It was a quick guess. I remember attending his funeral in Pagat Teras( is that what the place is called?). I could not have been to his funeral after 1960 because I left Kulim in late 1959. Too confusing.
Any way glad to hear from you again. Keep in touch. Your brother has give up and gone fishing.

St Xavier’s marks a new chapter after 156 years

GEORGE TOWN: Next year will mark the end of an era for the La Salle Brothers’ public school administration in Malaysia when the last Brother principal in the country retires.

St Xavier’s Institution (SXI) here will see a government servant lead the institution for the first time in over 150 years when Brother Paul Ho, its 29th religious head, steps down in June.

“SXI was the first school in the nation to be administered and fully owned by the Brothers and it can be called the epicentre of spreading the La Salle vision of educating the young,” said Brother Director of Malaysia Anthony Rogers.

Although Brother Paul’s retirement would mark the end of the line of Brother headmasters in the country, Brother Anthony says it will not be the end of the Lasallian legacy.

“A long time ago, when people thought of the schools, they would always think about the Brothers but over the years, we have grown beyond that.

“There is now a whole La Salle family made up of every boy and girl who has studied in our schools along with the teachers, parents, staff and collaborators who have had ties with the schools.

“We’re handing over the baton and it’s a new paradigm which is formed with the same message by a community that knows what it means to be a Lasallian,” he said.

“Brother Paul’s incident is not new. Over the years, all our other schools have also been taken over by lay people.

“There is no real cause for concern as strong boards of governors have been formed to safeguard the traditions and it has been a long-standing promise by the Govern-ment to give us consultation in the appointing of heads in our schools,” Brother Anthony added.

“Since 1852 to 1965, the Brothers built 46 schools in Peninsular Malaysia and were also given 10 more in Sabah and Sarawak by the Bishop to administer,” he said.

On the future of the La Salle Brothers, Brother Anthony said there were many more good things to come.

“The Brothers’ initial priority was to set up a basic education system in the country and the Government has successfully taken over that responsibility.

“There are currently about 10 Brothers aged 40 to 60 who are still active in Malaysia and there has been a lot of thought about branching out into the setting up of private colleges or even universities.

“There is also an increasing number of children suffering from autism and providing education for children with special needs is also part of our plans,” he said.

Brother Paul, too, is positive about his impending retirement, and says the La Salle Brothers have achieved what they had set out to do.

“It’s okay. It’s moving and we have left our legacy.

“We hope that in whatever we have done, we have given the people what was expected. That is our yardstick of what a school should be.

“After all, we only came here to give education to the people of Malaysia and at the end of the day, we have done our job,” he said.

Joseph Needham 1900-1995

JOSEPH NEEDHAM will be remembered for his massive achievement embodied in the continuing Science and Civilisation in China series, the successive parts of which have been published by Cambridge University Press since 1954. This great work is planned as a history of science, technology and medicine in China, seen in its fullest social and intellectual context, and illuminated by a deep and sympathetic understanding of the cultures of both East and West. Through his writings he has radically changed the ways in which scholars and scientists evaluate both the history of Chinese culture, and the history of science medicine and technology understood as part of the common cultural heritage of the human race. He was undoubtedly the greatest Western sinologist of this century, and is probably the British historian best-known on a world scale. He has rightly been called "the Erasmus of the twentieth century".

HE WAS BORN on December 9, 1900, as the only son of a Harley Street physician and a musically talented mother. After attending Oundle School he went up to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and read biochemistry. Caius College was to remain his academic home for the rest of his life; he was successively a research fellow, tutor, fellow and finally (1966-76) Master. For most of the first half of his life Needham was engaged in establishing himself as a chemical embryologist of distinction. The major works of this period are his Chemical Embryology (1931) and Biology and Morphogenesis (1942). But by the time this second book appeared he was already moving in the direction which was to lead him towards his life's work.

IN THE MID 1930's he met three young Chinese researchers who had come to work in Cambridge. The interest these bright young people aroused moved him to begin learning Chinese, and when war broke out in Europe and the East it was this connection that led him to propose that he should be commissioned to establish a Sino-British Science Co-operation Office in Chongqing, to where the Chinese government had withdrawn in the face of the Japanese onslaught. During this time he was ideally placed to study what had been accomplished by the Chinese people in the field of science and technology over their long history. What he began to learn astonished him. It became clear (for instance) that printing, the magnetic compass and gunpowder weapons were all Chinese in origin, despite the puzzlement that Francis Bacon had expressed over their beginnings when in the seventeenth century he pointed to "the force and virtue and consequences of discoveries" (Novum Organon, Book 1, aphorism 129).

AFTER THE WAR he worked with UNESCO in Paris for a while, but on his return to Cambridge he had already planned the years of work that lay ahead. He set out to answer a question that had been presenting itself to him ever more clearly for some time: why was it that despite the immense achievements of traditional China it had been in Europe and not in China that the scientific and industrial revolutions occurred? He approached Cambridge University Press with a proposal for a one-volume treatment of this subject, which they accepted, but as time went by this plan swelled to seven volumes, the fourth of which had to be split into three parts - and so it went on. Twenty-three parts in all have so far been published, and five more are still on the way.

MOST OF THE EARLIER volumes were written in their entirety by Needham himself, but as time went by he gathered an international team of collaborators, to whom the completion of the project is now entrusted. As the project has broadened, so has the range of questions under investigation. It is now clear that no simple answer to Needham's original question will be possible. The quest has opened out into an investigation of the ways in which scientific and technical activity have been linked with the development of Chinese society over the last four millennia.

Dear Singh,

My name is Stewart Chew (Huat Guan) and I used to live in 9 Jalan Raya, opposite the Kulim Printing Press.
I started schooling in St.Patricks and finished in 1958 at form 3 - I would certainly continue but we did not have the numbers to have a form 4. So I continued in Badlishah where I finished in 1960, did a couple of years of temporary teaching in Sekolah Kebangsaan in Junjong. I left Kulim in 1963 to study in Perth.
I have just retired after lecturing for 31 years in Curtin University. So, although I spend most of my life in Australia, I always love my home country, and especially enjoy coming home annually to Penang and Kulim.
I continue to have fond connections with family members, old classmates, colleagues and even ex students who have returned to Malaysia and Singapore.
I read your Kulim Blog with much interest. Thanks for bringing back those happy memories of St.Patricks.
I was in touch with another old Kulimnite of my vintage. Wan Mocktar Ramlee @ Dave Li Wanji regularly sends me his Kulim news in THEtree.
We just had a reunion for the form 3s of 1958! in Penang. It was a great response from many oldies including two teachers - William Dielenberg & Ooi Hwa Hin. Yes I remember
Johnny Too quite well, as he was my younger brother's form teacher. Apparently he was not well and could not join us. The late Mr. Lau Tuck Sung was my maths teacher. The late Auyong Teik Yoon was my headmaster and his son San Foong was my classmate.

Well, those were the days! Its amazing to realize how St.Patricks, which humbly started in 1933 and grew up to be the most successful school in South Kedah - thanks to the foresight of her founder Auyong Teik Yoon.
All of us were well nurtured at St.Patricks - we were well disciplined and received excellent education from a succession of very good teachers. We can gratefully look back and truly acknowledge that these foundational groundings that we received have much to do with our later professional success.

I wish all modern schools have these same attributes of our old school. Don't you agree that the present day school kids can do with a little bit more discipline and manners!

Dear Friends,

Re-igniting the flame of friendships could never have been better then meet, hugs and handshakes!!....AND that was what I did on the night of Aug 1, 2008 at The Northam - All Suite, in Penang (East N West, level 2). For me this is THE night of all nights; meeting friends that I have given up looking after half a century of separation. (Friends that I used to play around with in good old Kulim back in the late 50s and early 60s!). Definitely the night of Aug 01, 2008 will be fondly remembered for a long, long time to come - the night when the Form III boys class of '58 of the St.Patrick's school Kulim had their first ever reunion after 50 years!!. This first ever reunion was so successful. There should be more like it in two or three years to come. The organizers of this reunion would like to stay low-profile but to that particular friend and those who had come forward (especially the duo who flew in from Australia) to help in making this reunion a success, salute!! You done a fantastic job men!

Hey wait something not quite right here! I am not from St.Pat, so what am I doing there? Well in 1958 I too was in Form III at SBS not SPS but then in 1962 I became a teacher at St.Pat (Private) School and I was there for about 3 years before I left for another job. That's the very reason I was present in the celebration

Steve Tan Chor Ing responded to my last letter in an sms; Dave, thanks for your THEtree of July 2008. I see now you've got my seniors too from as far as Australia and their feedbacks on life in Kulim back then was really interesting indeed. I didn't know the movie theater was named Kim Wah. When I was a kid I used to play around that area with friends. It was then an empty lot of land there.

And Abd.Hamid Salleh in an e-mail from England wrote; Dear Dave, I am in Birmingham again and will be home Aug.11. I was in Alor Star before that and phoned you up but the call went unanswered. After returning to K.L from Alor Star I was taken ill again and the children thought I should come here to take it easy. It was fortunate that I could make the journey with kind help from folks I met along the way.
When I saw the picture of The Tree in all its glory, a lot of memories came flooding back ..... the padang was where soccer matches of importance were played there. One match between SBS and an estate team was abandoned when the crowd rushed in and attacked some players who had continually fouled the SBS players.
Well the match was abandoned but the result favored SBS. I came to learn later that some people were taken to court and fined lightly for assaulting players They, the estate team players deserved it although the authorities thought otherwise.
Sometimes one had to pay to watch matches. I remember a cloth barrier was erected around the padang when a Kulim Selection played against Taiping Prison. No money no see la!
Fun fairs were also held there. I remember a Ghazal band with beautiful "women" doing belly-dance on stage. And of course Hassan Putu Mayong the comedian, remember?.
Those were the days, ya Dave? I remember so many things because of The Tree.

Hamid buddy, I am really sorry about that call that went unanswered. I must have left my mobile phone at home and went off without it.I am sorry too to hear about your illness. I hope and pray that you get well soon.Thanks for sharing with us those things that you remember about life in Kulim back in the early 60s. All the things you mentioned are still on my mind too, I haven't forgotten them. Fun Fairs were the in-thing then and I remember our band (3 guitars and one drum), comprising of boys from Jalan Pancor, now Jalan Tengku Bendahara - The Supersonic also took part at a Fun Fair there. On other occasion, Some boys from Jalan Market and I ran a business at one of the Fun Fairs there too - a stall where we played songs on request for a small fee. it was such fun and easy then - what a life!!

Keep in touch to keep THEtree growing ever bigger and stronger...Peace! (The St.Pat 50 reunion at Penang gave me the opportunity to meet so many more of my contemporaries. THEtree will definitely be what we want it to be after this; i,e Bigger & Stronger.)

Hai Guys! , I'am back.
It has been a long wait, I know.
As for me and my wife, we are glad to be back where the weather is cool and very comfortable.
Well, the energy put in by Teddy and Stewart over a whole year turned out to be an overwhelming success. No one ever thought the number of participants would reach a conservative total of thirty. It reached fifty to be exact. You could tell that everyone was pleased to be there to meet their long lost mates they sat in with in those early years. It was interesting to watch everyone trying very hard to guess who the other person was. And when the guessing game was over, without fail, it drew a loud and hearty roar of laughter. "Ah yah, You look so dfifferent lah. I thought you were someone else. How are you?
The amazement, the joy at the discovery, lasted the whole of the first evening. The questions of how are you and where have you been all these years and where are you now, kept repeating themselves.
I was, their teacher and one lovable fellow thought that I was one of his classmates. It drew a loud laughter when it was overheard by others nearby.
The makan at the hawker stalls across the road from the hotel was a good time for deepening the long lost companionship. They came from Australia, Singapore, Johore, Kuala Lumpur and the majority from Kulim, Bukit Mertajam and the neighbouring districts.
The dinner the next day drew a larger crowd when some of the wives turned up to share the joy of their husbands.
The man of the evening was Cheah Kok Poh who kept the 'class' alive with laughter.
More photos on the board and screen helped to give a better focus of the missing persons. The most popular of all that evening was Elvis who entertained us with a number of popular hits of the early years. He was great. I am sorry I forgot his name. ( will someone please click on comments at the bottom and add his name.)
We did not forget the ones who had left us for good and they included a number of their former teachers.
The party ended with a promise to get together again in two years time.
Three cheers for all those who turned up.
See you again hopefully.

Recently I acquired photo copies of documents from the La Salle Provincialate in PJ, Selangor.The school is officially opened in 1939 by Tunku Abdul Rahman(father of Malaysia) when he was the district officer in Kulim. Right now we are in the process of acquiring as much information as possible to upgrade the history of the school.During the dinner there will be slide show regarding the history of the school. Thank you very much for the unpdates on our reunion. Sorry that i juz couldnt make it for two nites for family reasons. Whatever this ONE reunion is what i am NOT goin to miss.

What you and the gang have in store for the members on the nite is allready fantastic and more then enuf i think. Too much stage n etc presentations would distract us from talking to each other and catching up for about half a century of our "time lost" with these frens that r turning up come 1st Aug 2008. For me personally...seeing you guys and talking abt the good old days are better then a 1,000 presentations......

Was in Kulim yesterday, passed by our old school (St.Patrick's) they hve painted the whole building orange (yuuuuckk!! what weird tastes these presnt administrations have!!!). There were abt 2 or 3 storey new blocks. The main building (facing the road) is beeing renovated....its windows are being replaced with large single glass sheets (may be they r goin to air-con the area). It is now Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan St.Patrick, Kulim! - SMKSP,Kulim.

Dear all Patricians,
I am Mohanarao. Ex-student - 1960 till 1968. At the moment I am the principal of St.Patrick Secondary School. This is the 75th anniversary of our school. At the school level we had/have a few programmes. On 27th January 2008, we had the inaugural general meeting for 'Persatuan Alumni SMK St Patrick". It was officially registered. We have produced a special button badge to commemorate the 75th celebration. The celebration was officaially launched on 17th of April. Covered in the Star. On that day 2 ex-students gave RM50000 to upgrade the school. Right now the renovation is going on to be in time for the main celebration on the 3rd of August. On that night we are planning a dinner in the school. I am appealing to all former Patricians to come forward to help me to regain the Patrician spirit and bring the school to its past glory. As part of the celebration, we plan to produce a commemorative school magazine bearing photograghs, information of yesteryears as well as small write-ups of ex-students of their days in school. Dear Friends,
Hi everyone!! how's life with you these days. I felt like a hundred years have passed by - it seemed such a long time that I didn't write you any letter - which actually I just missed the month of April 2008. The fact is I was in Kuala Lumpur for the whole of that month. As soon as I got back to Alor Star (where my home is, nothing can beat my old hometown - KULIM!!) the first thing that struck my mind was THEtree and all of you my friends; how I have neglected THEtree for over a month!! Hopefully I don't need to go out station anymore and thus could keep in touch with all of you under THEtree on a more regular basis - nurturing the friendships and rekindling the long lost comradeships!
I was back in my old hometown sometimes in March and what a wonderful feeling to have met (and hug) friends that I haven't met for the last 48 years!! I met Boon Lee and Steve (Tan Chor Ing). We chatted for quite a while (real nostalgic indeed.) as I was in a hurry to other destinations on the day we have to "postpone the meeting" but before I left I took a photo of the auspicious and rare occasion (moment like this is hard to find) for memory because memories are made of this! (Photographs I mean).
After I last wrote you (that is in March 2008), I was pleasantly surprised by a letter I retrieved (on 8 March) from my P.O.Box. It came from Kota Kinabalu and it was none other then our good friend Heng Ah Tee who wrote;

After going through THEtree there's a nice feeling over me. As I was tired after the "holiday" in Kulim, it act as a refreshing drink, it energized me.
I would like to congratulate you, to come up with such a wonderful idea "THEtree" you are one of those who do the extraordinary just to bring old friends connected and informed.
It will be a great pleasure to give any help if any of you folks intend to visit K.K. Just let me know in advance.

Well that is warm and that's what friendships are all about; Heng Ah Tee's letter testifies to that fact.
My search for a long lost friend (Lim Yot Tee) a former colleague at the SPS (Private) back in 1963 ended with one phone call in March of this year. I finally find Lim Yot Tee our old friend and now that we are connected, LYT promised me that he will try to get me yet another colleague (Loh Kee Chang) contact number.
Looks like I have come to the end of yet another nostalgic letter. I am sure I will have more things to share with you about our lives in Kulim once upon a time, meanwhile please don't be shy (or lazy) to write back or respond in what ever manner suitable for you. Here are 3 ideas for your reunion. I did a little research and incorporated a shield with a cross. It's part of the Arch Diocese of Penang's crest. I couldnt find a logo or crest for St Patrick's School so I used the Arch Diocese's crest as inspiration. Also, it doesnt have a lot of detail because detail and small embroidery doesnt work well together. So I made things chunky to ensure the embroidered logo will look great. Trust me on this, I've won awards for digitizing emboidery.Let me know what you think.

PADANG SERAI:
Padang Serai MCA Youth vice-chairman Ching Eng Wah, 43, was shot dead execution-style at a traffic lights junction here yesterday. Witnessing the horror was his wife Low Mui Keow who was seated beside him in their silver Mercedes. The couple were on their way home at 8am after having breakfast in Padang Serai town when two men on a motorcycle pulled alongside the driver’s side at the Jalan Padang Serai traffic lights and shot Ching in the head through the right window. Ching suffered the same fate as Lunas state assemblyman Dr Joe Fernandez, who was shot dead when he stopped his car at a traffic lights junction in Bukit Mertajam town in November, 2000. Low called her brother Boon Lai, 37, while still remaining in the blood-soaked car. Boon Lai, Ching’s son and their worker rushed over to take Ching to the Metro Specialist Hospital in Sungai Petani. However Ching was pronounced dead on arrival. Kulim Deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Ghuzlan Salleh said police have classified the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Kedah Wanita MCA chief Datuk Lim Bee Kau said there was a worrying trend of criminals being daring, to the extent of committing murder in broad daylight. “It worries me that such a vicious murder can take place in a small place like Padang Serai. “The prevalence of crime such as this requires some drastic measures by the police. They should check how weapons could be easily obtained,” she said, adding that more police patrols were also required. Kedah MCA Youth chief Boey Chin Gan said Ching was an active party member who was also the division’s branch Youth chairman. He said Ching, who was an aluminium frame supplier and had business concerns in Padang Serai and Sungai Petani, had been with the MCA for eight years. Ching leaves behind a 14-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son. His body was taken to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

We are moving into an apartment, just lockup go and leave it to the security concept, besides only two folks and a maid.
We had a program here on TV on fishing in the Kimberly which you plan to go August 8th next year. It is interesting . We have just returned from 10 a day trip to Alaska, the family, two boys (Men now), daughter in law, the two grand sons and of course Lily and myself. It is a different kind of holiday, The boys caught 4 halibuts and the average weight 12 pounds, each person with the license we were entitled to 2 halibuts.

Dear Teddy,
I am glad that one by one, the coveted members of our '58 class are coming out of the woodwork.
Francis Loo's face is very familiar - but I have totally forgotten him name. If I am not mistaken, I think he is together with the small group of our classmates who come from Machang Bubok and travelling together with San Foong.
I have been getting flashes of memory about the previously unidentified in '58 class photo. I think the guy with glasses next to Wooi Meng is an Ah Kow?
The Indian guy next to Siak Hock - I can't remember his name but can recall quite clearly what he does a lot in class. Do you remember him regularly putting his hands on his face, often sweating and screwing his forehead in an attempt to tell everyone that he is really studious!
And the big guy next to Sin Nam on the extreme right does not belong to our class but a year ahead. I remember he lived in Kelang Lama (Jalan Tunku Putra) in one of the Chinese wine shops. The reason why he was possibly included in the picture was perhaps he was a prefect.
You are having a nice retired life Ted, being away all the time. Why not? You deserve it.

Hi Guys,
I had a phone call on my mobile all the way from Canada from someone by the name of Francis Loo, my number and E-mail were given to him by Cheah Kok Poh. I remember there was one with the name of Loo but the rest I cant remember very much. I think he may be the one in our Class58 photo, back row, number 5 from the left, standing between Loh Kee Chiang and Verasamy. I have sent him an E-mail with the program and will try and find out if he is from the Class58.
Another suggestion from Bosco Chow and through the SMS, the use of the press with the photo to reach out to the rest and I may have told you about Subramaniam, Class58 photo, second row, second from the right.
And I am happy with the progress we are making and more importantly the interest it had generated.
Stewart, can you remember Loo and is he the one?
I will be away for the next 12 days and I thought it is better for me to send you a message before I leave and not that I have lost interest.

I know where the hotel is. I think I stayed there when it was just opened. The location is good but the traffic is terrible during the weekend. Good choice nevertheless.

For the moment I agree with you that we should be selective and stick to those from our class. I emphasize 'for the moment' because we might not get enough guys to fill a telephone box. If that happens then we might have to cast the net a bit further.

Hi Guys,
Last weekend I was in Penang and did some work there and as follows:-
1) Stayed at the Gurney Hotel & Resort, located in Gurney Drive, down town, rooms big, all suite all facitlites
Available, swimming pool, spa, bar, function rooms, ball room The rate I got was corporate rate RM 170 night, double or single. I discussed with them and requested them to offer the rate for the event. Basically room with breakfast and a sit down Chinese dinner in a function room, to provide special check-in desk, a hospitality suite and the date is checking in 31st July and checking out 2nd August.
I think the location is good and hotel facilities meet our requirement, we could have a hawker food but in a special place, opposite The York Hotel, which is walking distance. Let is see their offer.
2) Could not meet Auyong San Foong as he was in Penang, but met Bosco Chow ( Chow Teck Yoon’s son ) as he is in BM and a physiotherapist would be a key person to get thru to Yap Eng Hai. Subramaniam got through me and have asked him to get in touch with rest of the Indians, also explained to hem what we are trying to do and he seems excited. However, have not asked Bosco Chow and even Goh Siew Chong to join in as they are of the 1959 year. I now have Goh Chu Ting’s E-mail and mobile number and nearer the event will get in touch with him and others.

I have had some more revelation on the 1958 photo - if you can't remember 'the fat one' next to me - I can now recall him as a Mr. Cheah Eng Kean form ?Lunas. Can anybody remember why folks like Tet Shin, Wong Kwong Han and Kim Chooi who I am sure were with us in the class shortly before we broke up were not in the pictrue?[Ron's response] Did a small group of students come from BM either from the High School or the Chinese school?

Your blog on St Patrick's, Kulim is coming up nicely. More and more people are now emailing you old pictures with the latest being my brother's Form 3 Class in 1958 with Form Teacher Lau Tuck Sung. I'm glad I sent you a picture of my class of Std 5 in 1956 to start the ball rolling. Let's hope more and more old boys will send you more similar pictures.
I'll try to give some snapshots and impressions of St Patrick's and also Kulim gleaned from my reminiscences of 1953- 60 while I was in the school from Std 1 - Form 3.
Hopefully this will prompt others to do the same to eventually piece together a comprehensive and near complete history of our old alma mater with accompanying photographs, worn out and tattered these may be.
When I joined Std 1 in 1953, there was no school uniform yet and we just came in the clothes we wore at home everyday. The standard green shorts and white shirt came only in 1955 when I was in Std 3, but if I am wrong, could someone please correct me.In my first year at school in 1953, the school system of 11 years structured into Pri 1 & Pri 2, followed by Std 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9, where in the last year students sat for Senior Cambridge, was still pre-War.
I think the system was re-structured when I was in Pri 2 in 1954 into primary and secondardy with 6 years of primary (Std 1-6) and 5 years of secondary education (Form 1- 5) where at the end of Form 5, the equivalent of Std 9, we sat for the Senior Cambridge .
I still remember very clearly our Form Teacher Mr Hong Bak Keah kept on telling us that we were in "Std 2" and no more "Primary 2" as some of us used to being in Pri 1 the previous year (1953) still referred to Pri 2.
The books we used in Primary school were all about England was Malaya was still a British colony and the British Empire reigned supreme.I remember the Radiant Way series with colourful pictures of the English country side complete with oak trees, daffodils, etc. There were nursery rhymes of Jack & Jill, Tom, Tom the Pipers Son, Old Kind Cole, and countless others which many of us still remember to this day.
For arithmetic, we started adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying in pounds, shillings and pence, feet & inches, lbs & ozs rather than dolllars and cents and katis, gantangs, chupaks, whatever, though eventually we also used this.
There was also Malayan English in the Oxford English Course series, where in Std 3 or the old Std 1, we learnt about A man and a Pan, etc...
I remember we had to pay $2.50 a month for school fees in primary school and $5 a month for secondary school, a lot of money in those days. Though I was one of the fortunate ones in that I never had any problem in paying school fees, I can still recall there were some poor chaps who were made to go home when they could no longer pay their fees. I wasn't sure they were entitled to school grants. Perhaps they were. Education was solely in English and I remember Malay was only introduced in 1956, when I was in Std 5. (I had a double promotion from Std 3 - 5 in 1955 & 56). Mr Lim Thean Poh taught us Malay.
I do not know when the Std 6 govt examination was introduced, but it could be in 1955 when my brother Stewart sat for it. This primary school leaving examination weeded out about 1/4 of the class enrolment from Std 6 to Form I in most classes then. I remember our Std 6 class in 1957 (Form Teacher Clifford de Souza) was 40+, but when we proceeded to Form 1 in 1958, only 30+ students were left. Those who failed joined the afternoon school (more of that later). We went to Badlishah School to sit for our Std 6 exam as there were no facilities in the school then.The LCE (Lower cert of exam) at the end of Form 3 was first introduced in 1958, 1 year after independence or Merdeka the previous year. Again my brother's class was the first batch or pioneers to sit for this exam. I think about half of the 30 odd students passed, not large enough to form a Form 4. Those who passed LCE went to Badlishah School for their Form 4 and eventually Form 5. In 1959, St Patrick's secondary school had the odd situation of having Forms 1, 2,3 and 5, but no Form 4 because not enough students passed the LCE in Form 3 to form a class as required by Ministry of Education regulations. This trend was to continue for the next few years until 1964 when the school was able to have its first Form 4 with the required number of students, made possible from larger enrolments of A & B classes from the primary all the way up to Form 3 in the later years.
You did mention that St Patrick's started in 1933. Who was the HM then? Was it Mr Auyong Teik Yoon? He was at least there during our years until he died in 1965 and I think Lau Tuck Sung took over as acting HM for many years right up to the 1970s.St Patrick's functioned as some sort of a branch school to the main premier Christian Brothers' school, St Xavier's Penang. That was where the De La Salle Christian Brothers ( I remember Brother Bernard and later Brother Edward) were based and the commuted daily to Kulim in a small car (Morris Minor) driven by a Chinese a driver. The other missionary branch schools in Kedah and PW were St Theresa's in Sungei Patani, St Michael's in Alor Star and St Mark's in Butterworth. I think the Brothers were in charge of the secondary school while Mr Auyong took charge of the primary school and Mr Lim Thean Poh the afternoon school.But in sports, the morning and afternoon sessions functioned as one school. The afternoon boys were bigger (also older) and stronger than we morning chaps who were better in our studies. I remember Mr Auyong and Mr Lim Thean Poh used to put all those overaged (15 and above) Malay and Indian boys in the school (Div 2) football team for the inter-school soccer competition. In 1959, we made it to the Finals and the school chartered a bus for us to go to St Xavier's to watch the final. We beat St Theresa's and the next day we got a school holiday.
I think the school did not have more than 300 students at any one time as it was a partly-assisted school. The school office-cum-book shop was in fact an open air garage for Brother's car up to 1954 while I was in Std 1or 2, and it was later converted into the HM's office and book shop. There was no electric bell until many years later to tell us when classes would begin from 7.45 am until and school adjourned for the day round 1.15 pm. One of the senior boys used a big bell like the one used by the ice-cream vendor and he would walk up the steps to the upper storey of back portion of the main building and ring it. Our toilets too were very unhygienic. There was no running water for the boy's urinal and of course the latrines were the bucket type. The teachers' toilet was just a bathroom. But we did not mind at all.
The school grounds were not spacious compared to those of others like Badlishah with a big playing field. We did make do with a basketball court, badminton court and mini-playing field. Our annual school sports had to be held in the town padang at the back our our house in Jalan Raya.
The Kulim people, or at least our neighbours in Jalan Raya, used to call St Patrick's "Sampah thang" or literally "rubbish" school. "Sampah Thung" is the Hokkien coloqualism for the Malay word "tong sampah" or rubbish bin. However our boys, schooled in the missionary tradition were anything but the rubbish type and most of us did well in our examinations, whether in St Patrick's up to Form 3 or in other schools. Many of us either went on to further our studies in the university later on or became successful in whatever occupations and professions.Today of course everything has changed after what happened in KL in 1969.
The school is now a Malay school in all aspects except in name and it is very sad for old boys like us who like to associate with it, but can't do so wholeheartedly so because it has lost its tradition.

Comment. Gilbert and I were the first of the Dielenberg family to join the school in 1946.
The teachers were Auyong Teik Yoon, Lim Thean Poh, Boudville. Bro Cornelius (De La Salle Brother, (principal), Stephen Loo, and Kamalapan and a few others. You are right, David, we did not have any uniform. Most of us were fast tracked with double promotions. The after school activities were scouting, and sports. There was a prefect system in place. The rest is buried in the dim past. If people are willing to add their experiences we should be able to construct the history in small steps as we go along. I have nothing to add regarding the period between 1933 and the war years.

Hi Guys,
Attached is a photo of the Class 1958 and also the reverse side of the photo where there are some names and Signatures. Some of them I can remember but many particularly the Indians I don’t remember most of them.
I think we need to talk amongst ourselves and help to come up with the names and expand on our list, in order to be fair to them and that the event can be more successful. I will comment row by row

1st row left to right , Alan Khee Soon Lye, Goh Choo Thin, Liew Chin Nam, Kow Chin Chuan, Lau Tuck Sung,
face familiar but cannot remember his name, please let me tell me if you know. Next is of course, Ron Heng,
Mah Sin Nam and the last big fellow, I cannot remember his name.

2nd row, fat fellow is from Padang Serai, but I cannot remember his name, two Indians, the second one is some
Das, next two Chinese I cannot remember their names, then is Ng Wooi Meng, if we get him then we will know
the name of the fat one as they both come from Padang Serai. I am lost with the 3 Indians then Tan Siak Hock,
followed by Michael Foo Teck Chong, Low Yuen Choy but the rest in that row I am lost

Last or 3rd row, first two I can’t remember but the 3rd one is Heng Boon Kwong, followed byLoh Kee Chiang, next is
Loo something and then that Verasamy, Auyong San Foong, Sim Say Leong, the sleepy eyes is Teddy, then it is
Arunugerri The 3 fellow in the row is not Heng Boon Kwong, nut the one next to Arunegerri is him, cant remember
The fat one next to Stewart Chew Huat Guan and last or next is Low Chin Seong

Thank you for the response and I am really encouraged to get the reunion going. I will get the old photos of events of that time, landmarks of Kulim, photos of the old St Pat and including the individual ones. It it a long process and that is the reason why the dates that we have set out. I would also need photos of the teachers and those of our class that are no longer in this world. I think I can get Auyong Teck Yoon, Lau Tuck Sang, but the rest may have to slowly work on.
The CD idea is really a good one and nearer to the event and when I have all the photos will pass on to you.
The fund raising is also a good idea as there are those who are fortunate.
I will be away this week end and also from 6 – 8 July 2007 and after that will try and meet up with you and in talking we may come up with some ideas and how to get the things done.
